SAFI stands for seperating AIDS from immorality. SAFI believes it is important to separate AIDS from Immorality in order to identify the social, economic, cultural, and legal issues that enable the spread of AIDS in African countries.
SAFI does not refute that unprotected sex is the driving factor behind high rates of HIV infection. SAFI strongly supports the message of Abstinence and Use of Condoms as the most effective way to stop the spread of AIDS.
However, SAFI believes that these messages of Abstinence and Use of Condoms have failed to be as effective in Africa due to lack of a strong social-economic and legal foundation that exists in places where these messages have worked effectively.
SAFI has dedicated its efforts to identify and find solutions to the social, economic, cultural, and legal issues that impede on the effectiveness of the fight against AIDS in Africa. Using this approach, SAFI propagates grassroots discussions in rural parts of Kenya aimed at bringing these issues to the front of the debate and finding solutions.
SAFI also organizes leadership camps to train, motivate, and inspire a generation of young leaders to lead the grassroots fight against AIDS and poverty. Through formal and informal trainings sessions, SAFI aims to equip young people with the leadership and entrepreneurial skills that will enable them to fight AIDS and poverty in their communities.
SAFI is based in Boston, Massachussets. SAFI's officers, who formed the organization 2 years ago, operate on a volunteer basis. SAFI also has a volunteer Board of Directors in Kenya that manages the recruitment of students and provides oversight over the trainings programs. The organization?s trainings sessions are currently based in Kairi, a rural village in Kenya. SAFI's long-term goal is to develop a replicable training model that can be used across Africa.
